9/3/08 Warm-up

1. In many of the language investigations that I read I noticed patterns such as how family language becomes family language and how often times the language comes from a misunderstanding or joke then becomes a substitute for the correct usage. It also seems like the words used in certain families started when people were younger meaning that they grew up knowing and using these words.

2. These patterns show that people become engrained to find meaning in certain words used in the family context because of the amount of use they get. It also shows how people are able to change the meaning of certain words based on the context they are in and automatically recall their family "language" when they are in the family context.

3. To be an insider in terms of language means that you feel as though you belong to a specific group based on the language you use and that sense of belonging acts as an signifier for a person allowing them to find an identity among that group. This means that as a teacher I would need to be open and sympathetic to those peoples identities involved with language.
